Description
Custom Spout Pouches: Leak-Proof Liquid Packaging With Resealable Precision.
A spout pouch is a flexible stand-up pouch with a resealable plastic spout nozzle permanently welded into the top or side of the bag. The spout allows liquid, semi-liquid, gel, or powder products to be dispensed cleanly, without cutting, tearing, or inverting the package.
At Packaging Ship, we manufacture custom spout pouches for beverage brands, baby food companies, liquid supplement producers, sauce and condiment manufacturers, personal care brands, pet food companies, and household product suppliers across the US. Spout pouches work across an enormous product range. However, the spout format and the film structure must match the product’s viscosity, chemical profile, and retail channel to perform correctly.
Why Standard Pouches Fail Liquid Products
Standard stand-up pouches with zipper closures work for dry and semi-dry products. They do not work for liquids.
A liquid product in a standard pouch without a spout leaks at the zipper closure during handling. It requires the consumer to cut the top of the bag open, which makes resealing impossible. Furthermore, dispensing a thick sauce or gel from a cut-top pouch without spilling is difficult. Consequently, the consumer experience is poor, the product gets messy, and the brand association suffers.
A zipper closure is designed for dry product reseal. It is not engineered to hold liquid under dispensing pressure. A spout is. The spout nozzle is welded into the film with a hermetic seal rated to your product’s fill weight and dispensing pressure. Furthermore, a reclosable spout cap prevents re-contamination between uses. The product dispenses cleanly. The pouch reseals securely. The consumer uses the full product without spillage.
The Spout as an Engineering Decision: Not Just a Feature
The spout is the most technically complex component of a spout pouch. Its specification affects dispensing performance, seal integrity, and retail shelf presence simultaneously.
- Spout diameter determines flow rate. A 13mm spout suits thin liquids beverages, water, juices. A 20mm spout suits thicker products like baby food purees, smoothies, sauces. A 28mm spout suits very thick gels, nut butters, and high-viscosity personal care products.
- Spout position determines how the consumer holds and dispenses the product. A top-center spout is the most common retail format. A top-corner spout gives better dispensing control for sauces and condiments. A side-bottom spout allows full product evacuation without inverting the pouch.
- Cap type determines resealing security. A simple screw cap suits most food and beverage applications. A tamper-evident cap with a breakaway ring signals product integrity at first open. A sport cap suits on-the-go beverage consumption formats.
Liquid Format Decision Guide: Spec by Product Type
- Thin liquids (beverages, juices, water, liquid supplements): PET / AL / PE film structure · 13mm spout diameter · Screw cap or sport cap · Stand-up with bottom gusset · High-clarity window panel available · Full-color print on outer film.
- Thick liquids (sauces, purees, baby food, smoothies): PET / AL / PE or Nylon / PE for enhanced puncture resistance · 20mm spout · Tamper-evident cap · Reinforced side gusset for structural stability under fill weight · Matte or gloss finish.
- Oils and high-fat products (olive oil, coconut oil, salad dressings): PET / AL / PE film with grease-resistant inner coating · 13mm–20mm spout · HDPE screw cap for chemical compatibility · UV-protective outer layer to prevent oil rancidity from light exposure.
- Personal care and cosmetic products (lotions, shampoos, serums): Nylon / PE or PET / PE film · 20mm–28mm spout · Flip-top sport cap or disc-top cap for controlled dispensing · Soft-touch outer finish · Full-color brand print.
- Spec range across all formats: Film thickness: 3.5–7.5 mil standard. Bag styles: stand-up with bottom gusset · flat bottom. Sizes: fully custom by fill weight. Print: CMYK · PMS-matched · rotogravure and digital. Finishes: matte · gloss · soft-touch · metallic. Turnaround: 8–10 business days production · 10–15 business days delivery.
Three Steps From Brief to Delivery
Step one: Tell us your product type, its viscosity, your fill weight, and your retail channel. Include your brand artwork or direction.
Step two: We specify the correct spout diameter, cap type, film structure, and bag format. We send a digital flat proof and a film specification sheet before production starts.
Step three: Your spout pouches are ready in 8–10 business days and at your door within 10–15 business days total. No MOQs, a beverage startup testing a new format and a sauce brand restocking 15,000 units go through the same direct manufacturing process.
