Custom Shelf-Ready Packaging: What Retail Buyers Actually Require from Suppliers
TL;DR:
Boxes fail when the barcode sits on one side, the lid needs a cutter, or the case caves in. They pass when staff can open and shelve them fast. Custom shelf ready packaging starts at 50 units.
What Is Shelf-Ready Packaging, and Why Do Retail Buyers Reject It?
Picture the email. It shows up on a Tuesday: your cartons failed receiving, please resubmit. The product was fine. The box wasn’t.
Shelf-ready cartons, which some people call SRP packaging, are cases or trays that go from pallet straight to the shelf with hardly any handling. Buyers often say retail ready packaging instead. It’s growing: Persistence Market Research expects the retail ready packaging market to climb from US 92.1billionin2026 to US131.3 billion by 2033, about 5.2% a year. We build custom shelf ready packaging at Packaging Ship’s New York factory, so here’s what receiving teams actually look at.
Follow the carton: five stops from dock to recycling bin
The Walmart-led “Five Easies” criteria judge a box by what happens to it in the store. Let’s follow one.
Stop 1: Receiving dock. Can they identify it?
Boxes get checked at the dock first. Somebody scans them, and the product name and barcode need to be readable from more than one angle. The barcode on the outside also has to match the advance shipping notice (ASN). That gets expensive: SPS Commerce says a bad ASN can trigger chargebacks that start around $200 per order, plus fees per case. Print the UPC or GTIN on more than one side. Browse styles on our shelf-ready retail packaging page.
Stop 2: Backroom. Can they open it?
Someone has to open that case, and they’ll do it with bare hands if you let them. That’s what a perforated shelf ready box with a tear-away panel is for. If it needs a cutter, the box gets sliced and sometimes the product goes with it. We add the tear line to your dieline, and you can tear a physical sample before the full run.
Stop 3: Aisle. Can they stock it in one move?
Ideally the tray goes from pallet to shelf in one move. That depends on case pack, tray height and the planogram slot, so ask your buyer for units per case before anybody sizes a box. And mind the strength. SPS says cartons need a minimum edge crush test (ECT) or Mullen burst rating to survive a pallet stack.
Stop 4: Shelf. Can a shopper shop for it?
People don’t dig through displays. A good shelf display box keeps the front clean, adds a plain product description and puts your brand name and main claim where eyes land.
Stop 5: Recycling bin. Can it be taken apart?
Last stop is the recycling bin, which most people skip. The box should flatten or come apart easily. If your buyer cares about that, ask for FSC-certified board with water-based coatings and soy-based inks, and leave off plastic lamination unless the look really needs it.
Already rejected? Triage in three steps
Don’t guess what went wrong. Ask the buyer for the reason in writing, and ask for their current packaging guide. Then send us the failed carton’s dimensions and case pack. Our design team redraws the dieline for free. Approve the proof, test a sample, and only then reorder.
Choose your format: a decision grid
| Format | Best for | Watch for |
| Perforated tray with lid | Fast sellers, multi-unit case packs | You need the exact case pack |
| Counter or PDQ shelf display box | Impulse buys, promos, endcaps | It takes counter or floor space |
| Rigid display boxes | Cosmetics, candles, gifts | Costs more per unit |
Is shelf-ready always worth it? Honestly, no. An MIT logistics thesis found the payoff depends on how fast the product sells, what inventory costs to carry, how many SKUs compete for space and how the store restocks. If your item moves slowly, a plain case might be fine.

Packing round jars or tins? Cylinder rigid boxes often fit better than a square tray.
Order path: dieline to dock in four moves
- Send your specs. Product size, units per case, retailer name, quantity and the date you need it in store.
- Approve the proof. Nothing goes into production until you sign off in writing.
- Sample first. Tear it and stack it. Then show your buyer the result in custom PR boxes before the line review.
- Production and shipping. Standard production takes 7 to 10 business days after proof approval, and rush takes 4 to 5. If the print doesn’t match the proof you approved, we reprint at no cost.
Questions buyers ask before they quote
What is shelf ready packaging?
A case or tray built to go from pallet to shelf. You’ll also hear it called SRP packaging.
What’s the difference between shelf ready and retail ready packaging?
Usually none. People swap the terms, so just use whatever your buyer uses.
Does Walmart require shelf ready packaging?
Walmart publishes packaging standards, including the Five Easies, but what applies to you depends on your category and account. Ask your buyer for the current guide.
Do I need print-ready artwork?
Nope. Send your logo and brand colors and our team builds the artwork. Design is free, and you get unlimited proof revisions until you approve.
What’s the minimum order for custom shelf ready packaging?
There isn’t one. Orders start at 50 units, and the price depends on size, material, print and quantity.
