A pendant is a suspended jewellery piece,  a decorative element that hangs from a chain, cord, or wire. It has a vertical orientation when worn and a specific spatial relationship between the pendant body and the chain it hangs from. This vertical orientation is what makes pendant packaging different from every other jewellery format.

The Depth-and-Chain-Management Problem

Every pendant has two components. The pendant body, the decorative element. And the chain — which carries it.

Most standard jewellery boxes lay both components flat. The pendant body sits face-down or face-up in an insert. The chain sits coiled beside it or compressed underneath it. Consequently, the presentation looks like storage, not like jewellery being presented for purchase or gifting.

The correct engineering approach for a pendant box starts with display orientation. The pendant body should be visible through the lid or front face of the box,  ideally suspended in its natural hanging position. The chain should be held in a formed channel, a wrap post, or a clasp recess so it presents cleanly alongside the pendant body without coiling or tangling.

Additionally, chain management determines whether the pendant arrives in wearable condition. A chain that is compressed for days in transit develops kinks that do not easily straighten. A chain held correctly in a pendant insert arrives perfectly straight, ready to wear without any customer intervention.

How We Build a Pendant Box: Specification in Sequential Order

This is the build sequence for a pendant box at Packaging Ship. Each step is determined by the step before it.

1. Step 1: Material selection: Rigid chipboard in 1mm–2mm for gift and presentation formats. SBS coated cardboard in 14pt–18pt for retail display and DTC formats. Natural kraft board for eco-positioned jewellery brands. Material determines the structural weight class of the box, everything else builds on top of it.
2. Step 2: Structure selection: Display box with front-opening lid for pendant body visibility. Clamshell format with interior display frame. Two-piece lid and base with window cutout for pendant viewing before opening. Drawer box for a differentiated opening experience. Structure is selected based on distribution channel and display requirement.
3. Step 3: Interior configuration: Pendant body held in velvet, suede, or foam, sized to the pendant dimensions. Chain channel or wrap post in matching insert material. Clasp recess if the chain has a lobster or spring-ring clasp. Insert depth calibrated so the pendant body clears the box lid when closed without compression.
4. Step 4: Print: Full-color CMYK or PMS Pantone-matched across all exterior panels. Brand mark, product name, and collection details printed to the exterior. Interior print available on lid inner face for brand messaging or care instructions.
5. Step 5: Finish: Matte lamination for a refined retail standard. Soft-touch for premium gifting or DTC formats. Spot UV on brand mark or pendant illustration artwork. Gloss for fashion jewellery retail shelf positioning.
6. Step 6: Closure and special treatments: Magnetic closure for gift and premium formats. Ribbon pull for lid removal. Gold or silver foil stamping on brand mark. Embossing or debossing on exterior design elements.
7. Turnaround: 8–10 business days production · 10–15 business days full delivery including shipping.
